Should you join the Essential Oil movement with Young Living you are going to hear about Thieves. At great length. Whether you want to or not. So here is my introduction to it in a no-bullshit way.
What is Thieves?
To put it bluntly, it is a combination of essential oils that make up the base ingredient of a bunch of the health-related and cleaning products ranging from hand soap, hand sanitiser, dish soap, tooth paste, general cleaner, the list goes on.
There is a tendency in Young Living to ramble on about “harsh chemicals” and “toxic ingredients” so before we go any further I am going to tackle that. Everything is a toxin if you take it in large enough doses so I’m not going to use that trendy adjective. As for “harsh chemicals”, if you compare bleach, a name often referring to a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite, to Thieves, a combination of essential oils inspired by a 15th century legend about French thieves stealing from plague-ridden corpses and using the oils to prevent contracting the deadly plague then yes, bleach is a “harsh chemical”.
And that is the last we’ll hear of “harsh chemicals” and “toxic ingredients”.
Back to the Thieves
Legend has it that in the 15th century there were four French thieves (see what they did there) that used a “secret” combination of essential oils that they believed would protect them while they were robbing corpses from the various virulent diseases that abounded in 15th century Europe.
So how do I use it?
I work out on the roads in a fairly filthy environment from cleaning the streets to filling in potholes so even with my safety gloves by hands get dirty. And we eat on the road, often times bathrooms are few and far between and the ones we do find would make most mothers grimace. So I use the Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier. It smells kind of like tooth paste but it gets my hands clean enough that I can shovel in a servo sausage roll or a sandwich from home without having to worry about the nasty things I’ve been touching whilst working.
There are also the Thieves Foaming Hand Soap bottles, sit it next to the tap in the bathroom and use it when washing your hands. Smells pretty good.
You can also get it as the pure oil in the little 15ml bottle so you can add it to all sorts of things. I’ve observed that when the kids are unsettled in bed after I’ve dropped a bit in the diffuser they seem to calm down. I can’t find any science behind that but anecdotal observations have me going back to Thieves in the diffuser night after night when they are screwing around.
